HOW TO DRESS FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT: KEY TIPS

Planning a photoshoot is always exciting, but one of the biggest questions families ask before their session is: What should we wear? The truth is, your outfit choices can completely change the overall feel of your photographs. The right clothing helps create images that feel timeless, natural, and full of connection, while the wrong choices can sometimes distract from the moments that matter most.

I’ve photographed families and couples in every season — from cosy autumn woodland walks to breezy beach sessions along the Scottish coast. One thing I’ve learned is that simple, comfortable styling almost always works best.

1.Keep Your Colour Palette Soft and Neutral

When choosing outfits, I always recommend starting with soft, neutral colours. Shades like cream, beige, oatmeal, soft grey, muted greens, and warm browns work beautifully in photographs because they complement natural surroundings rather than competing with them.

These tones also help create a cohesive look across your gallery, especially when photographing outdoors in places like Parks, woodlands, beaches, or historic streets.

One of the biggest benefits of neutral colours is that they keep the focus on your family’s connection and emotion instead of drawing attention to bold clothing.

2. Choose Texture Instead of Busy Patterns

A great way to add interest to your outfits without overwhelming the photos is by incorporating texture.

Think cosy knitted jumpers, wool coats, linen dresses, corduroy, layered fabrics, or chunky scarves. These details add warmth and depth to your images while still keeping the overall look soft and timeless.

I usually recommend avoiding large logos, bold graphics, or very busy patterns, as they can pull attention away from the natural moments we’re capturing.

3. Comfort Matters More Than You Think

Family sessions are often playful and relaxed, especially when young children are involved. We may walk through woodland trails, explore parks, or wander around outdoor locations, so comfort really is key.

Choose outfits that allow you to move easily, cuddle your children, sit on the ground, and enjoy the experience without worrying about adjusting your clothes.

Comfortable footwear is important too. Boots or wellies are always a brilliant option for Edinburgh sessions — they’re practical, photograph beautifully, and fit perfectly with Scotland’s outdoor landscapes.

4. Accessories Can Add Warmth and Personality

Simple accessories can really elevate your photos, particularly during autumn and winter sessions.

Neutral hats, scarves, gloves, and cosy blankets can add texture, warmth, and personality without feeling overpowering. They also help create a relaxed lifestyle feel within your images.

The key is to keep accessories subtle and coordinated with the rest of your outfits.

5. Keep Bags and Extras Minimal

One small detail that is often forgotten about is bags.

Bright backpacks or bulky changing bags can sometimes distract in photos, so if possible, bring a simple neutral tote bag or woven basket for essentials. These blend much more naturally into the setting and can even add to the overall aesthetic.

Keeping things minimal helps maintain that effortless, organic feel throughout your session.

6. What About the Kids?

When dressing little ones, the same styling principles apply.

Earthy tones, cosy knits, comfortable layers, and practical boots work beautifully for children too. Layers are especially useful in Scotland’s ever-changing weather because they can easily be added or removed throughout the session.

And if your child has a favourite neutral hat, cardigan, or scarf they love wearing, feel free to include it. Personal touches often make photographs feel even more meaningful.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that your family feels comfortable and connected during your session.

Simple, neutral clothing inspired by nature will always help create photographs that feel timeless and authentic. The less distracting the outfits are, the more attention stays on the genuine moments, emotions, and memories we’re capturing together.

If you’re planning a family photoshoot and feel unsure about what to wear, don’t worry — I’m always happy to help guide you through outfit ideas and styling before your session.
